A whole tilted landscape of wells — a washboard potential. A lone body, or an out-of-sync crowd, gets pinned: it jitters in one well, unable to climb the barrier to the next.
Turn coupling up and the crowd phase-locks; aligned bodies pump together, surmount the barriers as one, and the whole school depins and slides down the chain — well to well to well. Escape was never an exit. It's a hop, and synchronized, it becomes an avalanche.

Pinned vs sliding is a real phase transition — depinning. Below a coupling threshold the crowd is
stuck (each body trapped in its well); above it, sync lets them cross barriers together and the population
transports down the tilt. This is how synchronized phases slide in Josephson junctions and
charge-density waves. The mesh moves as one, or not at all.
